Red Vodka: MNDR Plays Courtshop Event
I have been fighting a fever for two days when I arrive at the private launch for Courtshop featuring DJ Chrissie Miller and an intimate set by MNDR. The venue, Red Egg is like a deliciously surreal sick dream, blood red light refracted in disco balls, Hammer + Sickle Vodka open bar. MNDR lounges in a booth, sipping stylishly before her performance. The crowd is an eclectic mix of booty shakers and boozers. One smoker is from the Midwest via London and describes the showcase he put on for MNDR before she was a Brooklyn star, when her sound was more noise rock than dreamy dance. Finally, MNDR takes the stage, surrounded by smoke, pinpointed by a spotlight. HOLY DIVER is up front and she’s grabbing our camera lens as our flashbulbs blend with her light show and electric voice. I can’t help throwing my body into her infectious beats, sweating out all my lingering sick, feeling ecstatic, caught up in her energy until the last song, when she leans off stage and grabs my face. We rock out for a few magic moments and then she’s dancing off into the jubilant throng, waving her hands above her head, all wild energy, feeding off the fame.
